Road Cycling Holiday, French Alps

A fabulous 5-night road cycling holiday in the French Alps staying at the wonderful family-owned Plein Sud Hotel, Chantemerle in the heart of Serre Chevalier.

A tough, but by no means, extreme tour, this route includes three of the Tour de France’s most famous climbs: Col d’Izoard, Col de Galibier and Alpe d’Huez. If you have the legs, like a challenge, and would love to tick off some of cycling’s greatest classic cols this is the best way to maximise your time away.

Fully bilingual and experienced bike instructor, Philippe Mennecier (Claudia’s husband), will be leading the group either on the bike or in a support vehicle. Depending on the group size, ability and the ride, there may be a second guide accompanying you.

Originally from Lyon, Philippe is a passionate road cycling enthusiast and, having lived in Serre Chevalier for 25 years, has plenty of expert local knowledge.

Staying in the perfectly situated 3-star, Plein Sud Hotel, in the heart of Chantemerle enables the group to leave from the same hotel on bike each morning. Comfortable rooms, all with south facing balconies, a warm welcome and delicious food make it an ideal choice. There is lovely garden and outdoor bar area and heated swimming pool. The cycle routes are all within easy reach and no time is wasted travelling by minibus. There is a secure lock-up room for the bikes.

We want this road cycling break to be first and foremost, a holiday, and not a competition. Of course you will need a certain level of fitness to tackle the climbs, but it is not just about the cycling. We want you to enjoy being part of a like-minded group, meet interesting people, enjoy a friendly hotel with delicious food in a beautiful part of the world, and most of all have fun!

When you think of Izoard, the first thing that comes to mind is the barren scree slopes overlooking the road, which give the place a lunar feel, the so-called “Casse Déserte” situated just over 2 kilometres from the Col on the south side.

Although Serre Chevalier has a very sunny reputation, the weather can change very quickly in the mountains. Philippe may change or adapt the programme depending on the weather conditions, the group and other local factors (eg road closures).

Travel Insurance

On booking, you must guarantee that you have, or will have made the arrangements to insure your party as necessary to include any activities in which you may be participating.

If you are unable to travel due to the coronavirus restrictions or if you test positive for the virus, again your payment will be refunded, or, if you prefer, transferred to another holiday.

However if you need to cancel for any other reason, then the deposit and final payments are non-refundable as per our usual terms and conditions. See at the bottom of this website for details.
